SeattlePI: A Trump-in-reverse government takes power in British Columbia

British Columbia had its first progressive premier in 16 years sworn in Tuesday, with a gender-balanced provincial cabinet and pivotal support and policy cooperation from the Green Party in the B.C. Legislature.

The ceremony in Victoria came amidst a backdrop of tragedy, with forest fires raging across the province from Kootenay National Park in the Canadian Rockies to the edge of the Coast Range.

The city of Williams Lake has been evacuated, with thousands of citizens told to head for Kamloops.  Even Vancouver faces an air quality advisory.

“Canadians come together in times like this,” said new Premier John Horgan.  He noted that fire crises are striking with “increasing frequency” with climate change.
