An NDP MLA is requesting that Christy Clark change the legislature’s first day in session after the winter break.
Vancouver Mount Pleasant’s Melanie Mark says she’s asking the Premier to change the date because it coincides with the Annual Women’s Memorial March in Vancouver’s downtown east side.
“The Premier has the power to call a different date. I’m calling on her to reconsider. We should pay homage and honour the murdered, missing women in the downtown east side and march with them.”
The throne speech falls on the second Tuesday every February to start the spring session of the legislature, but Mark says this year should be different.
“It’s a day to pay homage to the advocacy that we’ve been trying to put forward in this province to say we need justice. Of course it’s important to have the business of the day continue in the legislature, but Christy Clark doesn’t care to bring together a fall legislative session.”
The BC Liberals have yet to respond to CKNW‘s request for comment.
